The Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) is a required part of your CDL final exam. You must be able to walk around the truck, inspect every major component, and clearly explain what you are checking and why. This page gives you the key areas to study.
Check engine oil level, coolant level, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and battery. Look for leaks, frayed belts, and loose connections. Make sure the alternator and water pump belts are tight and in good condition.
Check all mirrors, gauges, lights, horn, windshield wipers, seat belts, and emergency equipment. Make sure the parking brake holds. Check that all required documents are present โ registration, permits, and annual inspection.
Test all exterior lights: headlights (low and high beam), brake lights, turn signals, marker lights, and reflectors. All lights must work and lenses must be clean and unbroken.
Check tires for proper inflation, tread depth (at least 4/32 on steering axle, 2/32 on others), cuts, bulges, and foreign objects. Inspect wheels for cracks and missing lug nuts. Check that valve stems are in good condition.
Check brake hoses and lines for wear and leaks. Look at brake drums and pads for excessive wear. For air brakes, check air pressure builds to normal levels, test low-pressure warning, and test spring brakes. Know how to test the system and describe it clearly.
For Class A, check the fifth wheel for secure locking, proper adjustment, and that the locking jaws are fully around the kingpin. Inspect air and electrical lines between tractor and trailer. Verify the trailer is properly connected and landing gear is raised.
Walk around a real truck as many times as you can. Use a checklist. Practice explaining out loud โ the examiner wants to hear you describe what you are looking for and why. Our instructors will walk you through the entire inspection during training.
