How to Get Your CDL

Getting your Commercial Driver's License is a big step, but the process is clear when you follow the right path. At Mid-City Truck Driving Academy, we guide students from day one all the way to the final exam and a new career.

1

Sign Up and Get Started

Register with Mid-City Truck Driving Academy at 6740 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago, IL 60634. You can call 773-725-3000 to get started or ask questions. From day one, you begin preparing for your CLP (Commercial Learner's Permit).

2

Prepare for the CLP Written Exam

Before driving, you must pass written tests at the Secretary of State. Most students are ready in 3 to 5 days. Class A requires General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes. Class B requires General Knowledge and Air Brakes. We help you prepare with classroom instruction and real test questions.

3

Go to the Secretary of State

No appointment needed โ€” walk in with your valid Driver's License, Original Birth Certificate or US Passport or Green Card, and a $50 fee. Once you pass, you receive your CLP.

4

Classroom and Pre-Trip Training

While preparing and after passing your permit, you attend classroom sessions covering safety rules, truck systems, and regulations. You will also learn and practice Pre-Trip Inspection on real trucks in our yard.

5

Behind-the-Wheel Training

With your permit in hand, you move into driving. Training covers yard maneuvers, backing, parking, and road driving in real traffic. You can train on automatic or manual trucks โ€” your choice.

6

Job Opportunities and Support

During training, you will learn about job opportunities. Many companies recruit directly from our school. Truck driving is in high demand and open to everyone โ€” men and women, career changers, and people looking for stable income.

7

Payment Options Including WIOA

You can pay out of pocket or apply for financial assistance. WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) may cover full or partial training costs. We can guide you through the application and connect you with the right agency.

8

Final CDL Exam

The final exam has three parts: Pre-Trip Inspection, Skills Test (backing, parking, basic maneuvers), and Road Test. You must pass all three with a state examiner to receive your CDL.
